There are 3 realms of perception, exteroception, interoception and proprioception. Being aware of your breathing is a form of interoception, a perception of your visceral self, the activities inside your body. You can meditate by focusing on your breathing. You can meditate equally in the realms of exteroception and proprioception. By paying close attention to every element in your environment, you meditate through exteroception. This is the realm of mindfulness or intense awareness. By paying attention to all your muscle activity when you are active, you meditate through proprioception. This is meditating, for example, by getting into 'the runner's zone.' Being fully aware of your environment is also a form of meditation as is being fully aware of your moving body.
